MACTE: WORK IN PROGRESS ANSANM NOU KA SONJÉ, ANSANM NOU KA RÉZONNÉ!

To revive the Mémorial ACTe in Guadeloupe, a major cultural and participatory project was needed to explore the question arising from the 2020 cultural season: “What is MACTe? “.

Exhibition spaces, architecture, collections and museography… Visitors to the Mémorial ACTe – Caribbean Center for Expressions and Memory of the Slave Trade and Slavery located in Guadeloupe – are called upon today to express themselves on their vision of the New MACTe during public debates, exhibitions and meetings punctuating the year 2022. Thanks to the “MACTe: work in progress” and its carte blanche, everyone can contribute to the institutional and heritage reconstruction of the establishment. For this first part devoted to architecture, the guest is La Maison de l’Architecture de Guadeloupe (MAG).

A SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIP WITH MAG ~ Whether on the occasion of Heritage Days in 2015, the anniversary of the MACTe in 2017, or the Nights of the Museum in 2018, the MACTe has forged lasting relationships with architects and actors in the field. From this implicit collaboration was born the desire to enter into a long-term partnership with the Maison de l’Architecture of Guadeloupe. It begins with a first exhibition around the Prix de l’Architecture de Guadeloupe (PAG), in progress since December 18, 2021.

THE JAMAICAN EXHIBITION – JAMAICAN STUDENT ARCHITECTS ~ Since mid-February, you can also discover the Jamaican exhibition at the MACTe Forum– Jamaican architect students, which illustrates the vitality of Caribbean architectural creation in Jamaica. This retrospective features the work of students from the Caribbean School of Architecture (CSA) in Kingston, whom Guadeloupean architect Emile Romney has been collaborating with since 2019 as an external examiner.

A ROOTED AVANT-GARDE ~ The projects presented are surprising in more ways than one: they are the result of the vision of Jamaican youth on a Caribbean future, the dream design of an architecture for the heritage of tomorrow. Modern, innovative, avant-garde, they reflect other possibilities while rooting themselves in a shared culture. From literature to music, via dance, the projects exhibited show the undeniable links between our island territories and recall our common and parallel history. The MACTe nurtures the ambition to support regional cooperation by opening a window on the Caribbean School of Architecture, the only center of architectural training on a Caribbean scale, so that it becomes one more destination for young Guadeloupeans.

CARIBBEAN ARCHITECTURES UNDER STUDY ~ At the time of MACTe en Nous, MACTe an Nou, this cycle of exhibitions (PAG and JAMAICAN) in collaboration with MAG will end on April 24, 2022. It will allow the institution to build the idea of a contemporary Caribbean architecture while shedding light on this part of the heritage of our past. This is an opportunity for the MACTe to study the social and cultural developments related to housing, to reveal differences and analogies between our Caribbean cities deeply marked by the colonial and slavery experience.
