ALFREDUS: Expanding Beyond The Caribbean…The World Is His OysteR

Alfredus

Based in Guadeloupe since his early childhood, Alfredus has worked creatively for several decades, painting frescos that evoke his island environment. Today, his unique style is being exported beyond the frontiers of the Caribbean.

Légendes : 3. 4. 5. « Femmes d’ici et d’ailleurs » – Portraits présentés à la Suisse Art Expo de Zurich.

A multi-disciplinary artist, Alfredus started as an adolescent, translating his West Indian universe through numerous mediums and materials of all sizes. Whether he uses brush strokes on linen, spray paints on gigantesque walls, or employs his stylus on a graphic tablet, he always finds the means to unlock the inspiration provided by his adopted island. Lush nature, spectacular fauna, vernacular architecture, and a cast of authentic characters: his artistic vocabulary subtlety evokes these diverse influences with the help of a highly nuanced Creole color palette.

A skilled surfer, the artist also uses the sea as a frequent element in his compositions, just like the musicality he symbolizes by way of incredible rhythmic ripples in tangy tones. Alfredus has also painted numerous portraits of musicians, such as the late Jacob Desvarieux, leader of the band KASSAV’ as well as a fresco representing two illustrious members of Akiyo, a politically active band in Guadeloupe: one of its founders, Jean-Pierre Coquerel, and singer/drummer Fanswa Ladrezeau.

Renowned throughout the archipelago of Guadeloupe, Alfredus has also built a reputation on the Caribbean island of St Barthélemy. Starting in 2018, he has created colossal murals to decorate public spaces at luxury hotels, first at The Christopher in Pointe Milou, then for the legendary Eden Rock on the bay of Saint Jean. Having turned his focus to an international career, he explains his future ambitions: «My current goal is to export my paintings to showcase the Caribbean in foreign countries,» he notes, «I have already signed a collaboration with the Berthelet Gallery in Québec and participated in the Suisse Art Expo on August 24-28 in Zurich. Next is the Salon d’Automne at the Grande Halle at La Villette in Paris on October 20-23, 2022.»

Not forgetting his Caribbean roots, Alfredus plans to have a show in late 2023 at the gallery Spirit Art Space in Saint Barthélemy; a showcase with an eye toward the United States via its collaboration with Gallery 211 in Miami Beach.
