THE AMERICAN DREAM FOR SAINT MARTIN SINGER TAMILLIA

Known for her exceptional performances on the French version of The Voice Kids, singer Tamillia has made big strides since being on the show. After concerts in collaboration with some pretty hot names, she is now in Los Angeles, where her career is heading in a new direction.

ONAIR- Our magazine is read throughout the entire Caribbean, so please introduce yourself and your music for those who do not yet know you. What do you sing, what do you create?
Tamillia –
My name is Tamillia and I am a singer who grew up in Saint Martin. I have experienced many different cultures. Be it Spanish, Haitian, American, French, Dutch… all of these cultures inspired me to create my music in several various styles including Pop, Soul, RnB, Reggae, etc…

OA – You have several arrows in your quiver: in addition to your voice, the guitar, photography, modeling, composing… and even a desire to get into production I think? How do you juggle all these talents?
T –
I think that being an artist means being involved in all these different things. I am passionate about all these aspects of music. I started by singing other people’s music, then when I got a little older, at the age of 12, I wanted to write my own stories so I learned to play the guitar and started composing original songs. Now I write, I compose, and I record myself.

OA – What are you doing now? I think you have one foot in the United States, in Los Angeles to be exact…
T –
I signed with a music label in Los Angeles, where I am in the process of developing my sound, my image, and working on several musical projects. I am currently directing a series YouTube; an EP, and several concerts are in the works. I was able to participate in the Jingle Ball in New York last Christmas in collaboration with Z100, iHeartRadio, and the Saint Martin Tourist Office with numerous emerging American artists. I was able to perform some of my original songs, which I can’t wait to share soon with the entire world. To go from such a small island to a big state like California to follow my musical career is a dream come true! I always wanted to live in the United States and I am finally here thanks to my voice. I can’t wait for people to get to know me in Los Angeles. It’s an exciting new adventure!
OA – You were first seen on The Voice Kids, where you went as far as the finals on Matt Pokora’s team. What do you remember about that experience? What did you learn from that?
T –
My adventure at The Voice Kids was a springboard for my career, and opened an enormous number of doors for me, for which I am grateful. It was an unforgettable experience. I met many other artists and interesting people; that helped me confirm my passion for music.

OA – That certainly did open a lot of doors for you, such as opening for Gims in concert in 2019 at Galisbay. What was that like?
T –
I am very proud to be able to say that I opened for Gims in Saint Martin. I was honored that they selected me to sing. I also had the chance to meet him and he gave me encouragement about my performance that evening. He’s a good soul.

OA – With your success, you have never forgotten your island. You still live here sometimes and perform here as well. Such as recently during the Heineken Regatta or in 2015 when you sang La Marseillaise during an official ceremony following the attacks in Paris. What is your relationship with this island where you grew up?
T –
It’s my native island and I will never forget it. Saint Martin is magnificent and unique in all its splendor. It is also a cultural melting pot that gave me the opportunity to develop several different musical genres and styles. I am very happy and grateful to have the support of the population, I love to come back and sing for them. I encourage everyone to come visit Saint Martin!

OA-Speaking about your roots: your mother Dianique has supported you from the very beginning. Did she give you this love of music? What role does she play in your life today?
T –
Yes, I found my passion in life thanks to my mother who also sings. She trained me. She was my foundation, my pillar. Today, she is my manager, my guide. She supports and encourages all of my adventures.

OA – What are your dreams for the future?
T –
In the future, I hope to have an international music career, have the entire world sing the lyrics to my songs, become a household name, and promote my island.
