THE MULTIPLE UNIVERSES OF YESWOO DINI…

Yeswoo Dini is a prolific graffiti artist whose outdoor murals can be seen in all four corners of Guadeloupe and beyond. At a solo show at the Arawak Hotel in Gosier last June, he immersed viewers in his “Multiverse,” the title and theme of the exhibit. On Air was there.

Yeswoo Dini is a graffiti machine. Originally from Rennes, he arrived in Guadeloupe in 2003 and has not stopped embellishing the walls of public and private spaces with his spray paints. His portraits portray giant, realistic characters, who over the past two decades have become popular figures on the local landscape.

One of his early goals was to celebrate the Caribbean woman, with his “Yes Soul Sista” adding an impressive cadence to walls that are big enough to satisfy him. He also has a large capacity to reinvent himself, which is rather remarkable in a discipline where stylistic repetition remains one of the main ways an artist can be identified. But Yeswoo became interested in cubism and subtlety added a new style to his realism techniques. The graphic aspect of this integration, with flat areas of color, contrasts with the controlled gradations designed to reproduce shadow and light.

In addition to his “cubist-realism,” as he likes to call it, he also works in other styles, always in a spectacular format, including the sketched brushwork of comic book designers such Bilal, Moebius, Rosinski, Frazetta, and Kim Jung-Gi, who he fervently admires.

Another series seen over the past few years is dedicated to the Amerindian peoples, a subject that intrigues Yeswoo as much for the historic as well as aesthetic aspects. He dedicated a fresco in memory of Carloman Bassette, a Guadeloupean specialist in Amerindian history, shortly after his death in August 2021.
Known and recognized for his outdoor art, his recent solo show at the Arawak Hotel in Gosier allowed him to present more intimate work on the same themes already mentioned, as well as other paths of research he has been exploring for several years. The exhibit was divided into several universes of his “Multiverse,” providing the possibility to travel from one period to another in the artist’s life, and discover his work in both large and small formats, and in different mediums: charcoal, acrylics, spray paint, found objects, and other sculptural forms.

To discover or better understand that which motivates the creativity of this artist, now is the perfect time to follow him on social media.
