ONAIR – Victor O, you have just released a new song with a highly qualitative clip. How did the title «Blue Romance» come about?

Victor O – Blue Romance like a blue wave. A wave represents eternal, perpetual movement in the image of eternal romance. Eternity is also present in the clip through a wedding, the universal sign of infinite commitment.

OA – What muse inspired you to choose this theme?

VO – The muse of context (laughter). More seriously, after those long months when everything was relatively silent for artists, I wanted to mark what we hope will be a recovery with a love song. We are ending a period full of divisions. I wanted people to reunite through a theme. Love remains a universal, undisputed and indisputable subject that unites people. The song was actually released for Valentine’s Day.

OA – The videoclip is a work of art in itself. Did you think you would go that far in designing it?

VO – It is a project that I designed from the start as a “music and pictures” ensemble. I worked on the music and devised a scenery scenario of the song almost at the same time. I had a specific idea of the atmosphere to convey, the environment and even the person who was to play in the clip with me, Jessy Schuster. I co-directed it with Joël Jaccoulet with a team of musicians I really like and who, like me, love images. E-Sy Kennenga, for example, has been part of the adventure.

OA – How perfectionist are you?

VO – Too much ! (laughter) I like the result to be exactly what I have in mind … up to the slightest intuition … and it is true that seeking perfection is time-consuming. But that’s the way it is. Yes, I am a perfectionist. I need my clips to reflect my vision, especially the atmospheres, the sensory rendering of things. So, I’m happy with the result, it’s very close to the way I envisioned it.

OA – In what you saw, there was obviously the beauty of our islands …

VO – I am a Caribbean inhabitant and lover of the Caribbean and I enjoy highlighting it. There is this sense of belonging in my clips, especially through the shooting sites and cultural codes that can be found in them. In Blue Romance, I wanted to highlight Macabou more particularly, this natural site located in Vauclin. For me it was a source of mysterious inspiration. Its name imposed itself on me from the first musical notes when I composed the song. It is not the most famous beach in Martinique’s imagery but it has kept a wild and untamed character that I like and that goes well with this story.

OA – Tell us about your evolution since «Aboubacar 53%», your song that reached a national audience for its visionary side and quality.

VO – There has been no break but continuity in my work as an artist, while acquiring another form of maturity in my desires. Today, my desires as an artist are not the same as ten years ago. I have a more specific look at what I want to do and where I want to go. I would like to be in the lineage of Caribbean variety artists in a noble sense: Juan Luis Guerra or Vicente Garcia in Santo Domingo, Patrick Saint Eloi in Guadeloupe as well as Jamaican Bob Marley or Marc Anthony in Porto Rico. Blue Romance is a big step. It sets the milestones of the artist I want to be for the coming years, the fruit of creativity rooted in the present time and in my own time.
