The Academy of Sports and Arts (ASA) in Guadeloupe is for students from second grade through ninth grade, but under very special conditions. The classes are small, just 16 students, with personalized schedules. In the morning, the students have academic subjects, while in the afternoon they have their choice of other activities: Sports such as golf, tennis, horseback riding, gymnastics, judo, swimming, cycling, and fencing; Or artistic endeavors such as singing, guitar, piano, dance, design, theatre, chess, and visual arts. It is not required for students to be highly proficient in these fields to be accepted at the school. What counts is motivation: «The first year, the student tries everything, no matter what class they are in,» explains Erik Lequime, founder of the school. «The second year, the choice is reduced by half, and the third year, they chose the activity in which they wish to excel.»

The school trains future champions: «In sports, our goal is that when our students arrive at the CREPS in France they are well prepared, and without a difference in their level,» notes Erik Lequime. «The same is true for music, where they acquire the training for a conservatory. At the same time, the school does not screen the students at the beginning,» he points out. «We do not require a certain profile. Some parents enroll their children so they can blossom and open through non-intellectual activities, their sense of investment, their concentration, or simply for their pleasure.»

The school also does not want to be seen as socially elitist. Two scholarships are attributed each year to students who have a keen interest in a sport or an art form, but their parents do not have the financial means. «This allows us to maintain social diversity,» adds Erik Lequime. Cultural diversity as well: many families volunteer to host students that come from all the islands of the Caribbean.
