Guadeloupe: a multifaceted gem

Guadeloupe: a multifaceted gem

Guadeloupe islands are among the most beautiful jewels of the Caribbean Archipelago: Grande-Terre, Basse-Terre, Marie-Galante, La Désirade and Les Saintes, 5 unique, exotic locations less than an hour from their neighboring islands.

Breathtaking landscapes, waterfalls and rivers with silver reflections, unspoiled vegetation and postcard beaches: the Guadeloupe islands have a bounty of assets to offer. “Grande-Terre is fascinating, Basse-Terre majestic, Marie-Galante authentic, La Désirade surprising and Saintes mind-blowing”, as described by the Tourism Committee of the Guadeloupe islands (CTIG). The 5 Guadeloupe islands are exceptionally attractive destinations, each with its own specificities and diversity that make them ideal for Robinson Crusoe’s adventures and a romantic getaway, a trip with friends or a family reunion.

A recognized and preserved biodiversity

Green tourism enthusiasts will discover that the Guadeloupe islands are home to the only biosphere reserve in the French Caribbean designated by UNESCO. The Guadeloupe National Park contains mountain ranges ribboned by rivers and hiking trails. Its marine areas, small islets with white sand, are wonderful playgrounds for encounters with nature.

In Basse-Terre, at the foot of the famous Soufrière, hiking trails are also a must for nature lovers. Due to volcanic activity, geothermal energy is available to the privileged in this territory. In Lamentin, the hot springs of Ravine Chaude, with 33 ° C waters, are renowned as beneficial for the body.

Those who cannot resist the call of the sea can also explore the Pigeon islets, in the famous Cousteau reserve. Sea sponges, parrotfish, schools of rainbow-colored damselflies and many other species are an astonishing sight, a source of wonder for divers.

Captivating landscapes

Grande-Terre is located on a limestone plateau that has allowed the emergence of postcard beaches. Among the most remarkable, those of Sainte-Anne, Saint-François and Le Gosier, municipalities whose towns and hospitality will attract – like the whole of Guadeloupe – those looking for human-oriented tourism anchored in the territory.

Further along, on the coast, for more visual and emotional pleasure, the magnificent Pointe des Châteaux appears in full, imposing, dominant and carved in rock.

Another paradise between the two main “terres”: Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. This 15,000-hectare bay with transparent waters is dotted with preserved islets. It is home to two ecological treasures of the World Biosphere Reserve: an exceptional mangrove swamp and a barrier reef fifteen kilometers long.

A unique cultural site

Also at the heart of the butterfly, the ACTe Memorial is an essential visit. The first museum dedicated to the history of slave trade and slavery was created 5 years ago. This 240-meter-long edifice with its unique architecture is the first building you can see when entering Pointe-à-Pitre Bay by boat. It was designed as a radiant “beacon” over Guadeloupe and the Caribbean. It houses a permanent, exciting, strong, explicit and poignant exhibition with quality cultural programming. This Museum is unique in the Caribbean.

Precious, more intimate islands

Among the southern islands, Marie-Galante, rural and unspoiled, rewards a more authentic tourism, for more knowledgeable visitors. So does La Desirade. Open to the sea and the elements, this island invigorates while at the same time imbued with sweetness and serenity. Les Saintes is a paradise for yachting, where you can admire one of the most beautiful bays in the world, alongside those of Rio de Janeiro or San Francisco: shimmering colors, a specific architecture in a Caribbean atmosphere … it is a delight for photographers and painters.
